It should work if you have monitor when booting, while hotplug might not work.
New home assistant images has been made. They were tested with success on Khadas VIM1S.

Hello,
I can’t boot from a usb ssd after flashing with balena the new haos image for vim1s. How do you do it? Thank you very much.
Can you try booting from SD card? Following by standard way of installing to other devices.
Thank you for the answer. I installed ha supervised on an sd card and it works.
I wanted to install the new Haos image on an ssd to have a more robust system.
I am running HAOS (same way) for several years from SD card …
Once you boot system from SD card, move it to eMMC boot / root on SSD. Should work.
OK I’ll try. Is this an option in haos? I know that we can move the data on supervised but never tried.
I thought I just had to install on my ssd via Balena. Like no os on Emmc or sd, it would have started on my ssd in usb ![]()
Thank you very much
No. This is a default feature of Armbian OS. Which is base to run HA. You can transfer OS from SD card by typing armbian-install in an console. Direct USB boot works on some boards (Raspberry Pi, x86, …), perhaps not on this one. This I don’t know.
Ok thank you I will try all these options this week.
Thank you very much for your help.
Hello,
I saw that my installation method is deprecated (supervised using oowow).
How can I migrate to Home Assistant OS ?
Thanks by advance.
Installation method is deprecated, but it works normally, even on Debian Trixie. Few days ago I have moved my production HA from one hardware to another. Making a backup, restore on a new machine. I am using Zwave and many weird integrations - they all worked right away.
HAOS native support is limited to few hw platforms.
Hi @Armbian, do I understand correctly you moved away from the VIM1S? Since it’s Black Friday, can I ask you to which new platform you moved? Today I received the dreaded “Unsupported system - Operating System“ in my test environment, so getting a bit anxious.
Few days ago I have moved my production HA from one hardware to another.
Nope, no change on our side. Unsupported system message comes from Home Assistant.
More info:
I think there is no need to worry about - only installation method is not officially supported anymore. If installation will not be possible anymore, unlikely to happen this anything soon (1-2 years) and we won’t be able to patch it, then we will drop supervised method and move to Docker (which have some limitations compared to supervised, but is officially supported).
P.S. I am running quite complex setup on such environment and I have no issues.
Yeah, so if I want to continue with the VIM1S the choice is basically time or money.
Continuing with the existing hardware will require time:
- Install a base OS (e.g. Armbian) + docker and install “Home Assistant Container”.
- Essentials which I now have installed as add-ons (Zigbee2MQTT, Mosquitto broker, ESPHome Device Builder) will need to be installed in separate docker containers. Need to decide what to do with the less essential, but very much appreciated, components such as Terminal & SSH, Automation Inspector, File editor, etc).
The alternative is money, using different hardware:
- Buying an Raspberry Pi with some additional components (How to make a Homeassistant server (Raspberry Pi 5 with SSD))
- Download and install HAOS (Raspberry Pi - Home Assistant).
For both situations I hope to be able to restore a backup from current system (HA Supervised) but fear this may not work. So probably may need to manually reconnect and reconfigure 100+ devices.
