VIM4 not turning on

Please describe your issue below:

Hi, we’ve now had 2 VIM4 computers fail in the same way, where suddenly they will begin turning off randomly until finally connecting the power supply does not turn on the system anymore.

Is there any recovery for us, with respect to what is saved on the computer, or any other power supply options we can explore, aside from the USB C connector which could be used as fallback in such a scenario?

Hello @mnissov

How you supply the power? Please use the official 24/30W PD adaptor to supply the power.

Hello @numbqq

We are using an official power supply. We even have a lab power supply available if there is need for more control of the input voltage/current.

Note, pressing the function key three times rapidly causing the light to blink. So the system is still reachable somehow.

How should we go about recovering the system from this state? Or at least recovering the data onboard.

Hello @mnissov

Which system you used?

Hi @numbqq

Sorry I’m not 100% sure what you mean by system. It’s a VIM4 running ubuntu 20.04.

You can boot into oowow by press FUNC + RESET and then backup your data in eMMC.

And for restoring the computer to be functioning as normal again?

Hello @mnissov

It depends on what’s going wrong with your system, but at least you may backup some data.

How should I proceed with respect to getting the computers back in working order?

Hi @numbqq

Update from our side:

  • We press the function key 3 times and it blinks red.
  • Holding function and pressing reset and it boots into oowow (usually)

The challenge is the computer is shutting down (while using an official power supply). We have been able to start dumping from emmc through oowow, but approx 2% through this process, the VIM4 will crash, evident by the screen glitching out and freezing, following by the computer shutting off.

How should we proceed?

Hello @mnissov

Do you have a chance to capture the full serial debug console log of your device?

Hi @numbqq

We have some FTDI chips, so I can try. However, the link you provided describes how to use this after booting into linux, is there anything we can do from oowow.

Please setup the serial debug console and capture the full booting logs of your system in eMMC, we need to check what’s going wrong.

We’re trying to do this, but over time it becomes harder and harder for the computer to turn on at all. Pressing the F button 3 times still lights up red, but the VIM4 is reluctant to boot into either oowow or OS.

Anything we can do for this?

Edit: Also, backing up emmc from oowow doesn’t work, the computer typically crashes after reaching ~5%. So at this point we’re having difficulty both backing up and booting up the computer.

Hello @mnissov ,

Why you do this? If you want to boot into oowow, just press FUNC and reset the board.

As I said: booting into oowow doesn’t work.

To summarize: we want to recover some data from the emmc.

We have tried going through oowow, this results in one of two paths:

  • crashing while creating the image
  • refusing to boot at all (no light in LED)

We have also tried just booting the computer to manually drag/drop some files. This is now difficult however as the vim4 doesn’t boot up into the OS either (again no light in LED).

I mention the function key just to note that some light can still appear. This is all with the standard khadas wall plug. Please advise how to continue, even booting the computer and manually saving some files is sufficient.

Hello @mnissov

You can try to boot from the SD card.

Follow this documentation [1] to install the oowow image[2] to SD card and then boot from SD card to backup your data from eMMC.
