VIM3 reducing system boot time on Ubuntu 24.04 server

Hello,

I just installed ubuntu-24.04-server-linux-5.15 (link of firmware below) on eMMC.
Is it possible to reduce the boot time (now about 26 sec to login prompt)?

I’m interested in the loading part before systemd services, for example:
usb, audio and i2c devices scanning, long pause on
scanning bus 0 for devices…
etc.

Now I don’t use display, do not need audio, i2c devices, but I have uart device
and LTE modem on ttyUSB0-3, tcp/ip services.

Are there safe recommendations for removing some things from the kernel
(video driver support and something like that)?

My uboot part: ~11 sec
kernel part: ~12 sec.

Only sane way I have found is to do a yocto build, core-image-minimal. Our nxp and ti stuff will boot very fast, why, its a minimal package. Just add exactly what is needed to get the job done.

I have not found a yocto layer for khadas boards and its been a few years ago however some of the details needed to create a meta-layer depends upon information that amlogic is not making public.

That image they provide is about as slim as it gets, removing packages from it could lead to instability.
It does look like if you cleaned up the errors in uboot you would gain some time. When it gets an error message it adds to the boot time.

It also looks like your device tree could be slowing you down too. Clean that up and only turn on what is required to run your application and keep the board alive.

Which can be easily customized. Much easier then driving Yocto. If you need Ubuntu userspace, its easy to build and timings should be around the same.

@sergetsp @foxsquirrel if you require minimal image, Fenix already provides the facility to create minimal images, you just need to build it manually. You can simply add the other packages like the graphic compositor and such as you require manually.

Please point me to instructions on how to do that. In yocto I just add it either in a layer on in local.conf. I was not aware of that in fenix.

@foxsquirrel when building images with Fenix you may be offered to select the minimal image type among, minimal, server and desktop images, all the packages are part of the build scripts themselves.

You can also manually install the vendor hw support packages as you need by downloading them from the fenix apt repository: dl.khadas.com - Index of /repos/vim3-5.15/pool/main/

however, note, if you do modify this, it is very hard for us to help diagnose any runtime issues unless you are aware of the packages and their purpose.

Yocto works out better for us. Have a basic dev layer with all the tools it makes life much simpler when working with different vendors.

That sure does look simpler, where is the master package list for that framework.
