tried two different recent images from here: dl.khadas.com - Index of /Firmware/VIM1/Ubuntu/EMMC/
No luck, both get on apt upgrade these errors:

Next to try focal on USB/SD - but my SD card is quite slow. was hoping to use a much faster eMMC flash.
