Step-by-Step Help Needed: Setting Up Khadas Tone Board with Raspberry Pi 4 + Allo DigiOne on Volumio

I recently purchased a Khadas Tone Board, and I’m looking for step-by-step, beginner-friendly assistance to set it up with my Raspberry Pi 4 and Allo DigiOne running Volumio.

I’d appreciate any guidance on the correct setup process, including how to configure Volumio to recognize the Tone Board and ensure optimal audio performance. Any tips on connecting the Tone Board with the DigiOne and troubleshooting common issues would also be very helpful.

Thank you in advance for your support!

In Volumio you can goto: Settings → Playback Options → Output Devices and select your Tone Board as your output device.

How do you want to connect Tone Board with DigiOne ?

I’m planning to connect via SPDIF

My DAC is a ‘Khadas Tone2’ (not the ‘Pro’ version). ‘Tone2’ does not appear in my drop-down list of Output devices.

I checked on my side with Raspberry Pi 4B + Tone2 + Volumio, Tone2 is detected.

Volumio version: https://updates.volumio.org/pi/volumio/3.757/Volumio-3.757-2024-09-17-pi.zip

Please double check the connection to Tone2 is correct.

Tone2 only supports SPDIF IN, so the connection you want is like this ?

Raspberry Pi → Allo DigiOne —SPDIF–> Tone2

If so, you can check the Tone user manual to setup input source to SPDIF IN.

I noticed in the photo illustration that you’re powering the Tone2 via USB. I am currently using an Allo Shanti PSU to power my Tone2, but I’m wondering if you’d recommend powering it through USB or I2S for optimal performance.

Are there any benefits or potential issues with using one method over the other?

Hi
From this website, I realize Allo Digione is a device which turns I2S audio signal to S/PDIF audio signal. And our tone2 is a DAC,which can obtain audio source from standard USB C / RCA / I2S USB C / 40 PIN header.

  • Standard USB C is the first USB C on the left, it can connect to PC/phone/Pad and other USB host.
  • I2S USB C is the right of the Standard USB C,it can connect to our BT magic which is a bluetooth modual.
  • 40 PIN header can connect to our SBC products called VIM series.
  • RCA, I mean the yellow one on the third RCA on the right, it can receive any S/PDIF signal, Allo Digione can also be connected.

As to the power of tone2 you mentioned, both two USB C connects are all right, the performance is the same. An usage I recommend you that you had better to use our power cable to connect your tone2 to your PSU, you can buy it from our website.

When using Volumio OS, the ‘Tone2’ does not appear in the drop-down list of Output devices, and I’m unable to get any sound output.

To troubleshoot, I temporarily installed Roon to see if the problem was with Volumio or the DAC itself. In Roon, the Tone2 was recognized immediately, and playback worked perfectly, confirming that the DAC itself is functioning properly.

Any insights into why Volumio might not be recognizing the Tone2 or suggestions for resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated.
