M.2 SSD died and was getting too hot

Hi, the M.2 SSD on my VIM3 just died couple of days ago, so I’m using the EMMC for now. I do want to get another M.2 SSD however I noticed that the previous one got really hot, actually it was pushing the overall temperature so the fan kept getting activated a lot.

So I’d like to know if you get a heatsink over you M.2 drives or if there a special model that runs cooler than the usual ones?

Simple heatsink and ventilation is recommended with SSDs, it’s typically the controller which gets hot, not the NAND flash itself.

Something as basic as this will work

Typically prefer using more low power SSDs that consume less power and don’t get as hot, WD blue SSDs are low power and are a good choice.
