Please describe your issue below:

Hello,

I’m looking for advice regarding Home Assistant OS on a Khadas VIM1S.

Context:

  • The onboard eMMC is at end of life (Home Assistant reports 100% lifetime used)

  • I initially installed HAOS on the eMMC using OOWOW: it boots, but the eMMC is clearly failing

  • Before switching to micro-SD, I tried to boot HAOS from a USB flash drive (image flashed with Balena Etcher), but it never booted (boot loop / no startup)

  • The same HAOS image works perfectly from a micro-SD card

Currently HAOS is running from SD, but I’m concerned about long-term reliability.

Goal:
Continue using the VIM1S while avoiding the eMMC, and run Home Assistant OS on a USB SSD.

Questions:

  • Is direct boot from USB/SSD supported on VIM1 / VIM1S?

  • What is the recommended migration procedure once the SSD is available?

Thanks in advance for your help and feedback.
