Can't start OS without UI

Which system do you use? Android, Ubuntu, OOWOW or others?

I installed thru OOWOW and tried to launch Ubuntu server, Ubuntu server from armbian, Debian server, home assistant and Ubuntu xfce. Only xfce showed some UI. Other OS stack at Khadas logo or black screen.

Which version of system do you use? Please provide the version of the system here:

latest on 28.3.2025

Please describe your issue below:

I can't launch terminal based OS. Screen is powered on but no terminal/cursor is visible.

Post a console log of your issue below:

Nothing is available on the screen.

Checked Ubuntu 24.04 fenix server image version 1.7.3 and Armbian 25.2.3 bookworm minimal image. I don’t seem to have any issues and land up to console login just fine.

Can you share some details about your monitor? Like its model and edid information? Maybe the device is not supporting the resolution Can’t confirm until you share more information.

It is ThinkVision P32p-20. MTM: 62a2-gar2-ww. FRU: 5D10Z26827.

I didn’t find easy way to get EDID data. Nvidia control panel doesn’t show required settings for me. Will try to figure out.

Got EDID:

Interesting..Only 4k resolution is listed in the datasheet, but edid is showing a lot more resolution. console image frame buffer is limited to 1080p by default for VIM1S and I do see 1080p resolution defined in edid, so its bit confusing why console images is not working for you.

Can you try the following steps from OOWOW.

  1. Flash ubuntu 24.04 server fenix 1.7.3 image. Once flashing is done, instead of choosing reboot, exit the wizard and choose rescue shell in OOWOW’s main screen
  2. Mount emmc partition
# mount /dev/mmcblk2p1 /mnt
  1. Add 4k2k_fb to the fdt_overlays variable in the overlays/kvim1s.dtb.overlay.env file
# sed -i '/fdt_overlays/s/$/ 4k2k_fb/g' /mnt/overlays/kvim1s.dtb.overlay.env
  1. Unmount and reboot into ubuntu
# umount /mnt
# reboot

I did it but it doesn’t help. I checked that file after change and it has only 1 line. I’m not sure if it is expected.

changes looks ok. If you are able to ssh into the machine when booted into fenix image, can you share the output of dmesg? The default username, password and hostname of fenix image is khadas, so if you have ethernet connnected, you can just use ssh khadas@khadas.local and enter the password when prompted for the same.

I wasn’t able to ssh to device even thru eth. So I found another monitor that works fine.
