No native X11 support for GPU

I’m making early effort at building alternative desktop environments for VIM4, based on Jammy — including Unity 7.6 and probably XFCE4. Both of these efforts would use LightDM as the login greeter/session chooser.

  • As is, LightDM starts, and produces no display output.
  • Unity 7.6 is X11 based, because of Compiz, etc., with no plans for a Wayland port. If I switch to GDM3 for login, I can chose a Unity session instead of Gnome, but get returned to login when no X11 screen can be started.

Of course, all dependencies are satisfied!
Are there plans to add X11 support, or are there tricks to make it work on the VIM4?

We don’t have plan to add X11 support due to no GPU libraries under X11.

OK. That makes sense. Is this because of Amlogic proprietary blobs?

Yes, wayland is more preferred.

Of course that makes more sense to me now, too. I’d had said differently in 2019, but the edge cases have all settled down, and it’s a vast improvement.

Ultimately it means that X11 projects I contemplated will be abandoned. I also see little future for the efforts by the Unity team, with their adamant reliance on Compiz and X11.
