Which SSD for the VIM4?

I just purchased a SAMSUNG 980 SSD 1TB M.2 NVMe Interface Internal Solid State Drive MZ-V8V1T0B https://www.ebay.com/itm/224983691735 in anticipation of delivery of a VIM4.

Is this particular SSD a good, COMPATABLE choice?

Yes, I believe we have the 970 evo on some VIM3 and on a EDGE Pro server. They work good. Here is the benchmark mark on WD blue NVMe on a VIM3

$ sudo apt install gnome-disk-utility

You will need to order a heatsink for it, they get very hot and will slow down considerably in self protection mode.

Thank you very much for mentioning this SSD over-heating issue, and taking the time to provide the gnome-disk-utility information. As a result of your kind guidance, I have purchased this heatsink: https://www.ebay.com/itm/203831814017. Hopefully it will be compatible with the Khadas New M2X Extension (SKU: KM2X-V-002) that I have also ordered.

Best regards,
Larry

Just an FYI on the NVMe heatsink, if you get the model that has a metal plate that holds the actual heatsink on the ssd use caution mounting it. The ones I use have to be cut down or they short a couple of components on the adapter board. I did not ruin the board but was very embarrassed…

Just looked at the one you purchased, its not what we use but appears to have the metal plate. Just use some tin snips to trim it off if it does not have clearance.

I have a ‘newbie’ question - for a smaller M.2 nVME SSD (64g, 127g or 256gb) is a heat sink necessary as well? I want to use mine for development so a big disk probably will be overkill.

Rich

Yes, all sizes need a heat sink.
