Procedure for mounting images in order to edit files?

I have reached a stumbling block in my quest to install Armbian on my device.

I need to be able to edit HDMI resolution manually before first bootup. The obvious idea was to mount the .img file and edit that way. But I have been unable to figure out how. I only see one partition that is not mountable with kpartx. How might I mount the image?

I understand now that these images cannot be mounted easily, but only flashed or completely copied onto a storage device. It looks like the bootloader and boot logo probably among other things are intermixed together into the one image file making it non-mountable. But if you mount the rootfs.img directly in the fenix image folder you can edit files that way. Now you can copy, move, or rename the main image file and use make image to rebuild the image again.
