我看Edge-V的 M.2插槽是朝外的,需要外接转接才能用SSD,这是散热的考虑么?
Hi Sleep
I already have something like the M2 extension board, I’m asking it because I want to know why the khadas designer can’t fit the m.2 into the Edge-V board itself, there’s a lot of empty room in the back of the board.
I suspect the reason might be heat dissipation requirement
@mko_io heat dissipation is one issue - primarily in such a small form factor heat becomes problematic. The second issue is that we wanted the VIM3 to be able to fit inside a DIY Case, so it had to retain the original VIM form factor (which does not include SSD drives).

@tsangyoujun thanks for the detailed reply and blog post with nice illustration . I think it answers the same question a lot of user have.
If the physical width limitation is no longer a restriction(e.g next gen Edge-V4 is 88mm width) . Do you think SSD on board can be fit on board? Does another restriction can be solved like the heat dissipation?
thanks
You’re welcome.
I don’t know too much about next generation products. But yes, if the engineering team makes a larger board (which then requires a new casing), then mounting an SSD becomes possible.
With regards to heat dissipation, if an axial-fan is placed along the long-axis of the board, blowing air across the length of the SSD, that could (I’m not 100% certain) solve the cooling issue.
@tsangyoujun Cool, I hope Edge2 would have a onboard M.2 support, since M.2 SSD are fast and cheap now.
